You don't have to be a cartoonist to make cartoons!
Three (home made) dice and the calendar booklet
The weekly calendar page template
Hello and welcome to the Moodytoons Blog!
Moodytoons is a cartoon-making toy based on the idea that it takes just three components to create a cartoon facial expression: eyeballs, eyebrows and a mouth.
The game entails throwing three dice: a mouths dice, an eyeballs dice and an eyebrows dice, and then drawing the presenting components into the cartoon strip format provided. As each dice has six possible component variations, there are 216 possible combinations for distinct facial expressions. The player then interprets the expression and writes in what they imagine the character may be thinking or saying (see cartoon explanation in 'Instructions' button on menu).
I have been doing this daily for the past 3 years, throwing the three dice once per week day, twice on a Friday, and then imagining, drawing and writing their story. Examples of these cartoons can be found in the 2014 & 2015 Archive button in the menu bar. Please forgive the illegibility of some of the cartoons - they are photographs and scans of pages that I have drawn and written on.
These are just examples of course as some I consider unpublishable, some far too psychologically revealing and some make no sense at all! It is also worth pointing out that although the toy/game itself is the type of thing that kids and younger people in general might enjoy, the cartoons featuring on this blog are not written with kids in mind. Indeed some of them are very definitely adult themed!
I find it great fun making these cartoons, especially reading them back a year or two later - they have taken the shape of an obscure sort of diary for me.
